Pulpitis is characterized by inflammation of the dental pulp. Pulpitis can be clinically reversible or irreversible as well as histologically hyperplastic, chronic, or acute. There are a variety of types of pulpitis.

Asymptomatic Irreversible Pulpitis

Asymptomatic irreversible pulpitis is determined via clinical diagnosis based on subjective and objective findings indicating that the vital inflamed pulp is incapable of healing. Additional descriptors include no clinical symptoms but inflammation produced by caries, caries excavation, trauma.

Reversible Pulpitis

Reversible pulpitis is determined via clinical diagnosis based upon subjective and objective findings indicating that the inflammation should resolve and the pulp return to normal.

Symptomatic Irreversible Pulpitis

Symptomatic irreversible pulpitis is determined via clinical diagnosis based on subjective and objective findings indicating that the vital inflamed pulp is incapable of healing. Additional descriptors include lingering thermal pain, spontaneous pain, referred pain.
