Avulsion (Exarticulation)

The term tooth avulsion or tooth exarticulation is not something that sounds pretty, and the truth of the matter is that it isn’t.

Tooth avulsion is something people should be aware of, as well as what they should do about it, as it is a problem that can arise at any time.

What is Tooth Avulsion?

This is simply the act of a tooth being knocked out of the mouth due to injury. It is most common in children aged 7 to 9 years old, though it can happen at any time. It can be the result of an accident, such as a fall, a fight or other injuries that occur.

Generally, the front teeth are the most affected with this condition because they are in the front of the face, taking more of the force than the back teeth.

What Can be Done?

Well, the good news is that if a person loses a tooth due to injury, in most cases, the tooth can be re-implanted. This is true with baby teeth as well as adult teeth.

This is a Dental Emergency

It is important to remember that tooth avulsion is a true dental emergency because there is a very small window of time for the tooth to be reattached before the damage is irreversible with the tooth. There are many conditions that can affect whether or not the tooth can be successfully re-implanted, but if a dentist handles it within the first two hours, then this should not be an issue.

Make sure find a good dentist that works after hours, such as an emergency dentist, so you will know where to go if it is after hours for your dentist.
